Liza was born in Brooklyn NY. Her love for hair started at a young age. Tender headed as a child, Liza started practicing styles in the mirror. Eventually began braiding her friends hair on her stoop. While In high school she worked in salons and barber shops learning the business and working with natural hair. Liza attended Ace Cosmetology, where she acquired her Cosmetology and Barbering license. Liza loves playing with color and any form of self expression. Free spirit and lover of all humans, Liza enjoys uplifting and encouraging others to love themselves and believe they can do anything!
Janice Perez (our only straight haired stylist) has always felt a strong connection to the curly world. Being one of the older siblings of a big Puerto Rican family, she was often in charge of caring for her siblings curly strands. After attending a technical high school and graduating with her cosmetology license, she struggled to find her niche. Janice is super creative; she loves to alter clothing and even knits/crochets her own pieces! She’s always been a fan of bold make-up/styling and dramatic transformations. However, she wasn’t finding much opportunity doing what she loved while assisting at high volume salons. She took a risk and tried something different by interviewing to be Luvena’s assistant (a role she slayed) and, as a salon, we could not be more grateful!
As a curly stylist, Janice is very caring and thorough. No question will be left unanswered, and her positive, reaffirming energy will leave you feeling crazy confident in your new do!

Thalia Rose Gatison was born and raised climbing trees in North Haven, Connecticut. Though her mother never relaxed her hair as a young girl, she still grew up completely clueless when it came to anything curl related. As she got older, she began to express herself by wearing her hair out and even dyed it many crazy colors in high school! After realizing that music was not the right career path for her, she decided to go to hair school and help others reach their full curly potential as she did on her own. Two years ago she sniffed out the only curly hair salon in CT and started working here the same week she graduated from Paul Mitchell the school North Haven! Spiritual energy is everything to her, so expect her to have a crystal or two in her pocket while cutting/coloring your hair. She’s very passionate about astrology, yoga, sound healing, and self discovery, and feels very blessed to have found a salon that celebrates natural beauty and individuality!
This texture specialist has always had a passion for big, textured natural hair and crazy fashion colors. Her long term goals include traveling and working in print or film. We all believe that curls, coils, and kinks are more than a trend, and Thalia plans to help the media continue to accurately portray/feature all different textures of healthy natural hair. She’s 100% relaxer free and loves working with transitioning clients, as hair often relates to ones spiritual journey as well.

Susie is just your friendly neighborhood stylist!
A small town girl from Ansonia, CT. Over the past four years of being a licensed cosmetologist, she had such a pleasure in doing so many different things the beauty world has to offer. Susie is trained and certified in multiple color and cutting techniques such as Devacurl, Rëzolites, Olaplex and more. She enjoys using her knowledge to cater to every type of curly individual that sits in her chair. As a curly girl herself, she says she found her home to share and empower curly beauties. As her motto goes, “Your hair is your crown, you should wear it proud!”
As a little girl growing up, she always knew she wanted to go into a career that helped people! She fell in love with how much a simple trim to complete transformation can bring so much joy and confidence to someone. Her humble heart allows her to connect to her clients making them feel like they are right at home. As she spends her time away from the chair, you will find her listening to music, watching sci-fi shows, or enjoying her family. She also enjoys traveling and experiencing different foods. Because food is truly the way to a person’s heart. She is a dog mom to her fur baby where they both love being outside in the sun.
Known as Jenny only at the salon, a New Haven native, has been on her own curly hair journey since March 2017. At the start of her journey she was introduced to Luvena at a curly girl event and the rest was history. She became her assistant washing and styling her clients under her guidance and training. With her background in business she was promoted from assistant to Salon Manager. Although she doesn’t find herself at the salon as much as she would like just know she is behind the scenes helping Luvena come up with ideas to bring our curlfriends together.
Luvena, a New Haven native, is the owner of the Curly Hair Salon. Growing up biracial (black dad, white mom), she had a constant struggle with her hair. She didn’t know how to do her hair, and there were minimal products on the market (think hair grease, and pink lotion) for styling. There weren’t any salons that specialized in curls, so she had to either go to a salon that would straighten her hair, or go to a salon that had no idea how to straighten her hair. Being the oldest of two sisters, she became the hairstylist of the family. After finally giving into destiny, she became a licensed hairstylist in 2007. A few years into her career, she was introduced to cutting curly hair. When she saw clients’ reactions, and the way lives were changed with helping people accept their natural hair, she knew she had to do it ALL THE TIME! When the opportunity came in 2011, she opened The Curly Hair Salon. She is grateful to provide a space for women to be embraced, and to be able to embrace their true selves. She leads a team of amazingly talented women! She considers herself extremely blessed to be part of this movement.
